Lindsey Vance, MA, LPC, ATR-BC

Keynote speech:  

"The Power to Heal: A Community-Based Art Therapy Approach"

     Strengthening the reach of art therapy, particularly in communities of color, demands alternative approaches and cultural competency. Community-based art therapy practices with an emphasis on trauma sensitive framework creates opportunities to foster radical healing and collective well-being and eventually lead to healing centered engagement through empowerment and the age old, "meeting them where they are". This approach opens up a traditionally inaccessible system to communities who will greatly benefit from the use of art therapy and equip them with tools to furthering the healing in their own community. 

About Lindsey Vance: Lindsey Vance attended The University of Maryland attaining dual bachelor degrees in Fine Art and Psychology. Vance received her Masters in Art Therapy from The George Washington University. She is a Board Certified- Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC) and a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Vance has worked in an array of community mental health settings as a Mental Health Clinician and Art Therapist, including: medical, jail diversion, chronically homeless, school-based settings and with at-risk youth. Vance has worked with treatment teams, groups, families and individuals.

Vance was Program Director and Art Therapist for Project Create in Washington, D.C. where she developed and implemented therapeutic arts programming for children, youth, and families.

Vance is now Manager of Visual Arts at D.C. Public Schools. Vance also is an active member of the Multicultural Committee of The American Art Therapy Association. Concurrently, she provides Art Therapy and Counseling to families through The Wendt Center for Loss and Healing and teaches as an adjunct professor for Bowie State University.

• Ten plus years of experience working with youth and adults in crisis and with special needs;
• Ten years of experience working as an art therapist and professional counselor;
• Focus in counseling and trauma-sensitive care as it relates children, youth, and adults;
• Develops appropriate interventions and programs for varying populations, settings, and abilities;
• Collaborates with diverse partners to maximize the provision of services to clients, students, and families, and,
• Consults and presents on art therapy; diversity, equity, and inclusion; arts integration; and trauma-informed care to various audiences.
